The Compound Bars Bonded or Bimetal Strips are a useful tool for demonstrating thermal expansion as it showcases the differing rates of expansion and contraction among materials and allows for the analysis of thermal stress on bonded structures.
The handle of this product is forged from stainless steel, for low heat conductivity, and is then bonded to the active component. As the strip is heated over a flame, the varying expansion coefficients cause significant bending of the metal. This always places the metal with the higher expansion on the outer surface of the bend. Modern compound bars are bonded permanently, rather than using rivets like the old style.
